  • Holiday Overview

Join us in the beautiful and dramatic Borrowdale Valley for some of the UK's best hiking. Our walking is at 'Moderate/ grade 3' level, when on each full walking day we will cover around 7-11 miles on routes that include some ascent. Our Scafell Pike option day offers something tougher at 'Challenging/ grade 5' level but is a great opportunity to reach the highest point in England!

  • What's Included

    • Four nights single occupancy full board (4 x dinner, bed, breakfast and packed lunch) at the Glaramara Hotel.
    • The services of our qualified Mountain Leader who will host this holiday and lead all walks.
    • The cost of any taxi / minibus transfers to the start or end of our day's walk.
  • What's Not Included

    • Travel to the start of the holiday, travel insurance, and personal expenses such as additional drinks and snacks.
  • This is a week of 'Moderate' walking with a 'Challenging' option day. You can decide on the day which you prefer. We take the ascent of Scafell Pike at a steady pace, not a hurried one. Our aim to take breaks and enjoy the experience to the full, but we expect the route to take around 8 hours.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Valley Walk

If you can, join us on the arrival day by 2 pm for a half day local walk to get to know your fellow travellers and the environment close by.

[3 hours walking]

For those who are unable to arrive by then, join us for dinner at 6:30 pm, after which we will talk through our planned programme.

Day 2 - Derwentwater lake shore

After an exhilarating open-top bus ride along the length of the valley we will walk along the quiet shore of the lake, stopping for coffee at the beautiful garden cafe at Lingholm. Continuing, we'll picnic on the shore, take a break at the Borrowdale Hotel where yet more spectacular gardens await, and then finish our valley walk back at our hotel

[6-7 hours including stops]

Day 3 - The Borrowdale hills and Catbells

On this day, we'll walk from our hotel up onto the nearby summits of Maiden Moor and High Spy, then walk this easy-going high-level route with spectacular views out to The Irish Sea and across the Solway to the Scottish hills. After visiting the popular Cat Bells summit we will descend into the valley for welcome refreshments and a bus to the hotel

[6 hours walking]

Day 4 - Scafell Pike or the Mountain tarn circuit (option)

A journey into the spectacular mountain scenery around Scafell and the central Lakeland fells. Our grade 3 route takes us to to Styhead and Sprinkling Tarns for a real sense of being in the midst of this awesome landscape. Our grade 5 route does similar, but with a diversion to the summit of Scafell Pike.

[6 or 8 hours walking]

Day 5 - Seathwaite waterfalls

The tumbling streams at Sourmilk Ghyll and Taylor Ghyll descend from the high mountains here to decorate the valley sides with ribbons of white water - an atmospheric spot at which to sit and say good bye to this special place.

[3 hours walking]

Please note that the above itinerary is subject to weather conditions being favourable. Walking times shown are approximations and may vary. Our aim, above all, is to make the right choice each day so that we enjoy the most appropriate route for the conditions.

Accommodation

For our north Lake District walking holiday we will be based at the Glaramara Hotel near Rosthwaite in Borrowdale. Its location is second to none, set deep in the heart of the most spectacular Lakeland valley. It also offers great food, a comfortable bar, and an extensive garden where you can relax after a day of fresh air and exercise.

Hotel postcode: CA12 5XQ

To reach Glaramara by public transport, take the train to Penrith, from where  buses to Keswick and then to Seatoller take you almost to the front door of our hotel.

To reach Glaramara by car, leave the M6 at Jn 40.  Then take the A66 to Keswick and the B5289 to Seatoller.
