Nestled off the coast of Northumberland, Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, is a serene and mystical place steeped in history and natural beauty. As we drive across the causeway, which is only accessible during low tide, we are greeted by the sight of ancient ruins and the majestic Lindisfarne Castle perched on a rocky hill.
The island offers various walking trails that lead through picturesque landscapes, from sandy beaches and rolling dunes to lush meadows teeming with wildlife. The tranquility of the island is striking, providing a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
On our recent Skyline trips to this historic place we have been lucky enough to spot the occasional porpoise, plenty of seals, and varied bird life including dunlins, puffins and guillemots. The secret is to get right into he nooks and crannies of the island, exploring its farthest corners to find peaceful habitats. A full lap of the coast path amounts to around 6 km – a journey we take slowly so that none of these remarkable sights is missed.
There is time afterwards to visit the Lindisfarne Priory, the birthplace of the Lindisfarne Gospels, and exploring the quaint village with its charming cottages and independent shops. A walk on Holy Island is not just a journey through stunning scenery, but also a step back in time, rich with spiritual and cultural insights.
For those who prefer, there are also some excellent pubs serving local brews, and The Pilgrims coffee house, where a great post-walk cuppa can be had.
