  • Holiday Overview

    Join us in the beautiful Langdale Valley at this superb location in the heart of Cumbria's most impressive fells. Our walking is at Easy grade, when on each full walking day we will cover around 5-7 miles on routes that include only a limited amount ascent and descent.

  • What's Included

    • 4 nights single occupancy of a double ensuite room (4 x bed, breakfast and packed lunch) at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel.
    • The services of our qualified Mountain Leader who will host this holiday and lead all walks.  
    • The cost of any taxi / minibus transfers to the start or end of our day's walk.
  • What's Not Included

    • Travel to the start of the holiday, travel insurance, and personal expenses such as additional drinks and snacks.
    • Evening meals are not included but each evening we will book a table for those who would like to join us.
  • Grade 1 - 'Easy': This guided holiday is aimed at anyone who loves being among the hills and in the mountain environment, but who prefers a more relaxed pace.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Loughrigg Tarn

If you can, join us on the arrival day by 2 pm for a half day local walk to get to know the others in the group and stretch the legs after your journey.

For those who are unable to arrive by then, join us for dinner at 6:30 pm, after which we will talk through our planned programme.

Day 2 - The Langdale Valley

We begin our holiday with a gentle exploration of the beautiful Great Langdale valley. From the New Dungeon Ghyll area, we follow the valley floor towards Chapel Stile, enjoying magnificent views of the Langdale Pikes and the surrounding mountains without having to climb them. We continue along pleasant tracks and paths beside the River Brathay, passing traditional farms, woodland and open meadows. There is time for refreshments at Chapel Stile or one of the valley’s welcoming inns before continuing towards Elterwater. From here we follow the attractive riverside path past Elter Water and Skelwith Force, finishing our walk at Skelwith Bridge. The route provides superb Lakeland scenery while keeping the walking relatively gentle.

Day 3 - Ambleside and Rydal Water

Today we start in the lively market town of Ambleside and make our way back to Skelwith Bridge on a beautiful low-level route. We leave the town and follow the River Rothay towards Rydal, passing through attractive woodland and enjoying views of Rydal Water. We continue through the peaceful countryside around Rydal Hall, with it's superb waterfalls and coffee shop, before following paths and quiet lanes towards Elterwater. The route then joins the Cumbria Way beside the River Brathay, providing an especially pleasant final section. The day combines lakes, rivers, woodland and classic Lakeland villages.

Day 4 - Little Langdale and The Cumbria Way

We leave Skelwith Bridge and follow the beautiful riverside path alongside the River Brathay towards Elterwater, passing Skelwith Force and enjoying wonderful views of the Langdale Pikes. From Elterwater we continue into peaceful Little Langdale, following quiet lanes and country paths to the Three Shires Inn, where we can stop for a morning coffee. After our break, we retrace our route for a short distance before joining the Cumbria Way which leads us back towards Elterwater. We then follow the riverside path past Elter Water and through woodland, finishing at Skelwith Bridge. This is a particularly scenic walk, with rivers, waterfalls, woodland and beautiful valley views.

Day 5 - Dungeon Ghyll

A low level walk to enjoy the impressive cascades at Stickle Ghyll and the iconic Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. An opportunity to stretch the legs and soak up a last does of scenery before we finish our programme by 1.30 pm.

Accommodation

For our south Lake District walking holiday we will be based at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel near Ambleside. Its location is very special =, just 5 minutes' walk from the white waters of Skelwith Force and adjacent to Chesters cake and coffee shop! It also offers great food, a comfortable bar, and an pleasant terrace and garden where you can relax after a day of fresh air and exercise.

​To reach the hotel by public transport, take the train to Windermere station, from where the 516 bus take you directly to the hotel.

To arrive by car, leave the M6 at Jn 36.  Then take the A591 to Ambleside and then the A593 to Skelwith Bridge.
