Highlights:

  • Fine coastal walking along this famous stretch of the Cleveland Way as it passes through idyllic harbours and along broad, sandy beaches.

  • A convenient base in the historic town of Whitby, famous for its gothic abbey, St Mary’s Church, and (of course) fish and chips!

  • Time to explore the iconic harbours at Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes, Runswick bay and Skinningrove.

  • Walking holiday hosted and guided by a qualified walk leader, with taxis and buses to and from our walks all arranged for the group.

  • Small group size – ten people maximum.

  • 4 nights in the very comfortable Riviera Guest House.

  • A week of energising, invigorating, briny air and spectacular seaward vistas at this special time of the year when early summer is really getting going!

* On our grade 2 trips, we walk around 11-15km ( 7-9 miles) in a full walking day on good tracks which have some ascent and descent, occasionally on rough steps.  Our pace is steady rather than fast - we like to take time to appreciate the amazing places we pass through.

  • Sea-facing single, £795

  • Rear facing double £895

Yorkshire Coastline.jpg

A week of walking this historic trail, now part of the Cleveland Way, as it snakes along the coast between the North York Moors and the sea.  With a moderate daily mileage, we’ve allowed time to explore the special places we visit and to really soak up the atmosphere of this area.  Take time to wander the streets of Whitby, paddle on Whitby Sands, and maybe try the scampi!  A visit to the abbey is a must, this historic building being the centre-piece of the town’s much photographed gothic architecture.

What's Included: 4 nights single occupancy (4 x bed, breakfast and packed lunch), and the services of our walk leader who will host this holiday and lead all walks.  Also included is the cost of any taxi / minibus transfers to the start or end of our day's walk.

What's Not Included: Evening meals are not included, although the trip leader will offer to organise a group table each evening for those who wish to take that option.

ITINERARY

DAY 1

A local ‘shake-down walk’ to check out the town, beach and abbey, and to get to know the other walkers along on the trip.  We’ll end our exploration with an early evening welcome drink down on the harbourside and watch the trawlers returning with the daily catch.  (3 hours walking, 6 km)

DAY 2

We head along the shore and out of Whitby, dropping in at the village of Sandsend, before the cliff-top path takes us up to enjoy views to the coast further north.  We pass through the spectacular and dramatic scenery of Kettleness Head, before descending into Runswick Bay, a charning village with its toes in the sea.  Here we have time to explore before our transport returns us to our hotel.  (6 hours walking, 14 km)

DAY 3

On this day we continue our journey from Runswick Bay to Staithes.  The path winds along the cliff-top with breathtaking coastal views, and then passes the rocky cove of Port Mulgrave before descending into Staithes itself, with its much-photographed cove with harbourside pub and life boat station.  This is an ideal spot for some late lunch, or even a cream tea in one of the charming cafes here.  The afternoon’s continuation leads us to Cattersty Sands and the resort of Skinningrove where our transport collects us for the return trip.  (6 hours walking, 14 km)

DAY 4

From Skinningrove, we continue to Saltburn-by-the-Sea, a Victorian seaside resort with an historic pier and oodles of charm.  The Victorian cliff-lift is a unique feature here, adding to the sense that the past is still very much present here.   We take time to explore this unique place before our transport collects us to return to Whitby.  The afternoon is left free for your further exploration of Whitby and its surrounds.  (4 hours, 7 km)

DAY 5

On this day we complete our coastal journey by enjoying the stretch south and east of Whitby, starting from Robin Hood’s Bay, where the famous Coast to Coast Path terminates.  We head along the cliff-top, past the eye-catching topography around the National Trust site at Saltwick Bay, before once again entering Whitby, this time on foot, to finish a week of memorable walking along this unique coast with a final picnic lunch before our onward journeys. (4 hours walking, 10km).
